This month we are featuring TALON Grips sponsored shooter Ethan Depo.

Ethan has been a sponsored competition shooter of TALON Grips since 2015. He graduated high school in June 2016 with a 3.9 GPA and is attending college in the fall. He is new to the sport and started competition shooting in the summer of 2014. His first competition was an IDPA match which got him hooked on competitive shooting. Recently he’s begun shooting USPSA and is enjoying every moment of the format. Admittedly he has much to learn in shooting sports, but he loves learning which sets him up for success.
In 2015 he competed in the NY IDPA State Championship and placed high junior. Recently he competed at the USPSA Area 7 Championship and and learned a lot. He hopes to be a stronger competitor by the end of next year and plans to redeem himself at the 2017 Area 7 match.

The Southern Trapper is owned and operated by Dane Bligh, a young entrepreneur committed to making a difference in his community.

In 2013, Dane began mentoring a troubled seven-year-old elementary school student, who came from a very impoverished community in North Charleston, South Carolina. The first three weeks of mentoring passed without the student saying a single word.

“EARLY ON, I THINK HE ASSUMED THAT I – LIKE EVERY OTHER ADULT MALE IN HIS LIFE UP UNTIL THAT POINT – WOULD JUDGE HIM, AND THEN EXIT HIS LIFE AS QUICKLY AS I ENTERED IT.”

While riding bikes one afternoon, they stopped at a corner store to buy a bottle of water. Dane noticed that his mentee was admiring the wallet that Dane had originally made for a friend. At that moment, Dane realized he had the perfect project to help teach his mentee a skill he could use later on in life.

The Southern Trapper started because Dane wanted to make a wallet with his mentee, that would never tatter or fall apart. It quickly turned into a company when the student said he wanted to make a second wallet to sell to a friend. Since Dane had all the raw materials, he let him keep all the money he made, and just like that, Dane’s mentee became an eight year old entrepreneur.

My first memory of shooting was in an old dump in the woods of PA. My dad and I would dig up old bottles looking for ones to keep. The rejected bottles were put on tree branches to shoot with my trusty Daisy Red Ryder. If the bottle had any semblance of thickness the BB would ricochet off. The thinner new bottles would shatter in a burst of glory and 8 year old satisfaction.

Today we shoot steel, paper targets, and clay pigeons. However there are ways to make fun targets to shoot without spending much moolah.
