TALON Grips for Long Guns

We make grips for over 200 different firearms, most of those are for polymer framed pistols. However one of our fastest growing segments is grips for long guns. We make grips for many ARs, Tactical Shotguns, and Bullpups.

A positive grip on a long gun is every bit as important as it is on a pistol. Long distance precision shooting and close proximity tactical operations both benefit from a positive interface between the user and the firearm.

Making TALON Grips Work With Laser Sights

We receive questions about whether laser sights work with TALON Grips. Most of the time the answer is yes.

TALON Grips are less than .5 mm thick, and so in most cases, they can be installed first and the laser sights will fit over the grip.

The M&P line is slightly different when a laser grip is used. You can either cut off the backstrap portion of the grip or if you have a full size M&P order the M&P Full Size PRO/C.O.R.E./Crimson Trace Grip pre cut.

Do it Yourself: Making A Grip Out Of A Sheet Of Material

Sometimes we get grip requests for less popular or rare firearms. We can’t make grips for every firearm under the sun however, there is a solution. Get some grip material and make your own grip.

Making a grip is not difficult and can be a very satisfying project. There are several ways to make your own grip out of our grip material but the technique we’ve seen the best results from do-it-yourselfers is using a piece of paper to create a grip template.

You will need a pencil, masking tape, several sheets of paper, and sharp scissors or x-acto knife.

Step by step Instructions:

  1. Field strip the firearm.
  2. Lay the gun flat on a piece of paper and outline the side profile of the handle.
  3. Cut out the side panel profile outline with the scissors.
  4. Now that you have 1 side panel profile, cut out another identical side panel profile for the other side of the handle.
  5. Apply both of the side panel profiles to the gun’s handle with masking tape.
  6. Use paper to cover the frontstrap and backstrap area, connecting the side panels you’ve already cut out and applied to the firearm’s handle. Tape the paper frontstrap and backstrap to the gun’s handle.
  7. If the fontstrap and backstrap are not parallel you will have to cut relief cuts in the paper template  to get the paper grip to lie flat on the handle without creases.
  8. Determine where you want the seam in the grip to reside. If you are right handed the front of the left side panel is ideal. If you are left handed the front of the right side panel is ideal. Another option is to make the seam in the center of the backstrap.
  9. Once you have the template made and fitting the firearm well, remove the template and lay it on top of the backing side of the TALON Grip material. Trace the the template’s outline onto the grip material and cut out.
  10. Make sure you leave ample room around the magazine release for proper functioning.
  11. Follow the standard grip installation instructions.

Take your time, be patient and chances are you will make a great grip.

What Grip Texture Is Best For You?

We make choices every day.  One of the first choices each day is choosing a drink. There are several good reasons most of us don’t start off the day with an adult beverage and unwind in the evening with hot cup of joe. The same applies to selecting the right grip texture for your firearm. This post will help you select the grip texture that fits your needs, shooting style, and carrying experience which will enhance your overall experience.

We offer Rubber, PRO, and Granulate grips.  All of the textures will improve your grip (or purchase) on your firearm, but each texture has specific strengths and optimum operating conditions.

The granulate texture provides a very positive grip in all conditions. It is very aggressive in nature and is often compared to skateboard tape or sandpaper. The granulate texture is typically preferred by those that open carry, shoot competitively, and/or use during tactical operations.  The granulate texture provides a distinct advantage over the polymer surface, however the sand paper-like finish can snag on clothing or cause discomfort when rubbing against skin.  Typically this texture is not recommended for concealed carry, although depending upon the individual carry setup, it may work for some individuals.

The PRO texture combines the best characteristics of the granulate and rubber textures. The PRO texture is comfortable enough for most people when carried against the skin in concealed carry applications and aggressive enough for competition use. This texture performs very well in wet or dry applications.

The rubber texture grip material provides a versatile grip that many shooters prefer over the granulate.  This material is a textured (pebble finish) rubberized material. It is not abrasive nor will it snag which makes it ideal for concealed carry.  It is comfortable against your skin, and many users have stated that it makes shooting more enjoyable (especially for smaller “snappy” firearms like the Springfield XD-S). The rubber texture is also preferred by many shooters with softer hands.

Granulate Characteristics

  • Provides a very positive grip on a firearm that is unrivaled in all conditions
  • Great for open holster carry (not concealed for most users)
  • Can be made less abrasive by sanding down with 120 g sandpaper prior to installing the grips
  • Abrasive feel

PRO Characteristics

  • Combines the best of the Granulate and Rubber textures in one grip
  • Provides a very positive grip on a firearms in wet and dry conditions
  • Comfortable for most people in concealed carry applications
  • Not abrasive
  • Will not print or snag on clothing
  • Extremely versatile

Rubber Characteristics

  • Ideal for concealed carry and/or open holster carry
  • Comfortable against skin
  • Does not snag or wear clothing
  • Extremely versatile
  • Softer feel
  • Most popular selling grip material

Get TALON Grips Approved For Use On Your Duty Weapons

TALON Grips are being used by LE agencies nationally to enhance the safety and shooting performance of officers.  We can help you get TALON Grips approved for use on your department issued guns. Testimonials and qualification results from several LE agencies that have tested and are currently using TALON Grips are available for your review.

The following is part of a testimonial that we can supply on agency letterhead.

“The Grips have made a significant improvement to the feel and gripping surface of our firearms. Our test with the grips was with our newest hired Deputy. He has been shooting the Glock 22 Gen 3 and 4 for the past 7 years. His range scores have been low for some time but he always passed.

He continues, “We shoot the State Firearm Qualification which is 50 rounds, from 3 feet out to 15 yards. He shot the course of fire and was amazed. His score went from upper 70% in past years to 98% with the TALON Grips.  He said the grips were the reason for his improvement, he said from the first grip in his holster to the shoot and sweep his hand never moved and was comfortable.”

TALON Grips has a T&E program that enables your agency to test TALON Grips first hand. For more information on our LE Program please contact us at le@talongrips.com
